Beets contains natural pigments call d betacyanins that have potent cancer fighting properties on lab mice. They’re also one of the best sources of folate and betaine, two nutrients that work together to lower your blood levels of homocysteine, an inflammatory compound that can damage your arteries and increase your risk of heart disease. Finally, the journal hypertension published a study that showed that the nitrate in beets may also help lower blood pressure. Blueberries can also help prevent a range of diseases from cancer to heart disease. A mere 3.5 ounces contain more antioxidants than any other fruit! During our Facebook live event recently, one viewer asked me a question: what are other blood cleansing foods?
I responded riots like beets, red and blue fruit and vegetables, leafy greens and I forgot to add, citrus fruit, particularly lemons. Apples, oranges and other fruit also contain a dietary fiber and chemical called pectin, which helps to remove excess fats from your liver and blood. Generally all vegetables because high fiber foods are blood cleanser in that they help to cleanse the blood of bad fats, cholesterol, toxic chemicals and other useless substances. Flaxseeds, oatmeal, barley and beans are also great blood cleaners because of their high fiber content.
So eat more raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, flax seeds and beans/lentils!
- 1 cup unsweetened flax milk
- 2 TBSP Zenberry Vanilla Berry protein powder
- 1/2 a small organic beet with skin and a few beet green leaves
- a handful of cilantro or basil (more leafy greens!)
- 1/2 cup frozen organic blueberries
- 1 TBSP flax seeds
- 1 or 2 drops of liquid stevia (I like the Body Ecology brand)
First, blend dry the flax seeds to break their hull and make them absorbable. Add the milk and the other ingredients and blend for 1 min. If your blender is old or the blades full, consider chopping the beets in small pieces or use a chopper to shred the beet.
